A saline tectonic lagoon in the Venezuelan Andes, source of the mineral once central to pre-Hispanic traditions.

Laguna de Urao

Laguna de Urao is a small natural saline lake located near the town of Lagunillas, in the Sucre municipality, west of the Venezuelan state of Mérida. The water body is of tectonic origin and sits within an otherwise semi-arid Andean landscape, giving the site an unusual character for the highland region of the cordillera. Its name derives from the mineral known as urao, a natural sodium sesquicarbonate that accumulates from saline waters and sediments in the lagoon. The lagoon is significant both ecologically and culturally. Indigenous peoples of the region descended into its waters to collect mineral-rich rocks from the bottom, which they ground and mixed with dried tobacco leaves to prepare chimó, a traditional substance still used in the Andes. Decreed a Natural Monument in 1979, the site continues to hold local importance as a natural landmark tied to pre-Hispanic memory, mineral-rich waters, and the identity of Lagunillas.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
