Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National Park is a protected area in central Kenya, set around the shallow, alkaline waters of Lake Nakuru in the Rift Valley, roughly 140 kilometers northwest of Nairobi and close to the town of Nakuru. The park revolves around the lake itself and the surrounding mosaic of grassland, woodland, and rocky escarpments, creating a compact but ecologically rich landscape within sight of a major urban center. The park's identity is shaped above all by its enormous gatherings of lesser flamingos, whose pink swarms across the soda lake once made it one of the most photographed wildlife scenes in Africa. Beyond the flamingos, the reserve has become an important sanctuary for both white and black rhinoceros and supports a wide variety of other Rift Valley mammals and birds. Established first as a bird sanctuary and later elevated to national park status, Lake Nakuru remains one of Kenya's flagship protected areas. It combines a world-famous bird spectacle, concentrated big-mammal viewing, and a dramatic Rift Valley setting in a relatively small and accessible footprint.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
