Magadi Bird Sanctuary

Magadi Bird Sanctuary is a small protected wetland in the Indian state of Karnataka, created at the Magadi tank near the village of Magadi in Shirhatti Taluk, Gadag District. The sanctuary is one of the recognized biodiversity hotspots of Karnataka, with its identity tied closely to a man-made village reservoir that has evolved into an important bird habitat in the dry interior of northern Karnataka. The area sits along the road corridor between Gadag and Bangalore, around 26 kilometers from Gadag, 8 kilometers from Shirhatti and 11 kilometers from Lakshmeshwar. Far from a dense forest reserve, the sanctuary's character is formed by open water, tank margins, and the surrounding agricultural landscape, which together draw a wide array of resident and migratory waterbirds. What makes the site distinctive is the convergence of a traditional rural water body, an active fisheries system, and a strong seasonal bird presence. Migratory species such as the bar-headed goose use the Magadi wetlands as a wintering ground, while herons, storks, ibises, ducks, flamingos and other waterbirds feed on fish, amphibians and molluscs, and at times on standing crops of barley, rice and wheat in surrounding fields.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
