Mudumalai National Park

Mudumalai National Park is a premier protected area in the Nilgiri Mountains of southern India, spanning 321 square kilometers in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri District. The park sits at elevations between 850 and 1,250 meters in the eastern foothills of the Western Ghats, sharing boundaries with Karnataka to the north and Kerala to the west. Established initially as a wildlife sanctuary in 1940, the area was incorporated into the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in 1986 and was declared a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 2007, with an additional buffer zone of 367.59 square kilometers. The park protects tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests that harbour remarkable biodiversity, including approximately 498 plant species, 266 bird species, and significant populations of flagship mammals such as Bengal tigers and Asian elephants. The Moyar River and its tributaries flow through the park, supporting rich aquatic ecosystems and providing crucial water sources for wildlife.
