A transboundary riverine biosphere reserve linking Croatia and Hungary along Europe's wildest stretch of the Danube basin.

Mura-Drava-Danube

Mura-Drava-Danube is a transboundary UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that follows the corridors of three major Central European rivers: the Mura, the Drava, and the Danube. It crosses the border between Croatia and Hungary, and is widely regarded as one of the most intact large floodplain-wetland systems remaining in the Danube River Basin. The reserve integrates existing national parks, nature parks, and Natura 2000 sites into a single, internationally recognised ecological network. The protected landscape is dominated by dynamic river channels, seasonal flooding, oxbows, sandbanks, gravel islands, riparian forests, and adjacent agricultural floodplains. Together these habitats support exceptionally rich biodiversity, especially for birds, fish, and wetland-dependent species, and they preserve ecological processes that have largely disappeared from other parts of the Danube basin. The reserve is also a product of long-running cross-border cooperation between Croatia, Hungary, and several neighbouring countries, including Austria, Slovenia, and Serbia. It was officially designated by UNESCO in 2017 under the title Bačko Podunavlje, cementing its role as a flagship example of large-scale, multi-country wetland conservation in Europe.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
