Malawi's smallest wildlife reserve and the historic refuge of the country's last black rhinos

Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve

Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve is the smallest wildlife reserve in Malawi, covering roughly 135 square kilometers in the southernmost Nsanje District of the country. Set near the Shire River lowlands and including part of the Matundwe Range along the border with Mozambique, the reserve encompasses a broad sweep of dry woodland, mopane, savanna, dambo wetlands, sandstone hills, and rocky cliffs. Although it once hosted all of Africa's iconic 'Big Five' game animals, decades of poaching have dramatically reduced its megafauna. Mwabvi is best known as the final refuge of Malawi's black rhinoceros population in the mid-twentieth century; today only Cape buffalo remain of that classic quintet, alongside antelope, smaller predators, and more than 270 bird species. The reserve's remote location gives it a wild, lightly visited character, and the park's management history reflects the wider conservation struggles of southern Malawi, including external nonprofit partnerships and a return to direct Department of National Parks and Wildlife oversight.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
