Northern Jaguar Reserve

The Northern Jaguar Reserve is a privately managed nature reserve in the northern Mexican state of Sonora, set in the foothills where the Sierra Madre Occidental descends toward the river valleys of the arid interior. It was created specifically to safeguard what is considered the northernmost remaining wild population of jaguars, an iconic predator that has otherwise vanished across most of the United States borderlands and much of northern Mexico. The reserve lies between the Ríos Aros and Bavispe, two of the principal river systems draining the eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre, and spans roughly 222 square kilometers of rugged, sparsely inhabited bushland. Because the area has very low human population density and is reached only by a rough dirt track, the protected landscape has remained relatively intact as a continuous block of wildlife habitat in a region where habitat fragmentation has been severe. Beyond its flagship role for jaguar conservation, the reserve is recognized for the broader richness of its arid tropical fauna, including four wild cat species, large prey populations, and a substantial bird community that mixes neotropical species with North American migrants reaching the southern edge of their range.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
