Odzala-Kokoua National Park

Odzala-Kokoua National Park is one of Africa's oldest and most significant protected areas, located in the Cuvette-Ouest Department of the Republic of the Congo in central Africa. Established first as a protected reserve in 1935, the park spans approximately 13,500 square kilometers of pristine rainforest, making it one of the largest national parks on the African continent. The park encompasses a remarkable diversity of ecosystems, including old-growth rainforest, dry forest, savanna, and the distinctive Marantaceae forest with its open canopy. In 2023, the Forest Massif of Odzala-Kokoua was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of its exceptional biodiversity and its critical role as a habitat for forest elephants and other threatened species. The park is managed by African Parks in partnership with the Congolese government and supports one of the continent's most diverse primate populations, with approximately 100 mammal species and 440 bird species recorded within its boundaries.
