Parque Ecológico Lago de Texcoco

The Parque Ecológico Lago de Texcoco is a large ecological park in the State of Mexico, on the northwestern fringe of the Mexico City metropolitan area, in the eastern portion of the Valley of Mexico. It sits inside the Área de Protección de Recursos Naturales Lago de Texcoco, a protected natural area that is also recognized as a Ramsar wetland site and an Important Bird Area, receiving around 150,000 migratory birds every year. The park was created on a former lakebed that was drained over centuries, leaving a saline, dry basin that was partially used as the site of a cancelled mega-airport. In that drained space, the Mexican government created a public park devoted to ecological restoration, recreation, and environmental education. Inaugurated in August 2024, the project combines recreated wetlands, restored halophyte vegetation, recreational spaces, and infrastructure that highlights the cultural and ecological significance of the historic Lake of Texcoco. The park stands out as one of the largest urban ecological restoration efforts of its kind, blending ecological recovery of an ancient lake system with public access in one of the most densely populated regions of Mexico. It is also a project of strong national symbolism: the Lake of Texcoco is closely tied to the origin of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, and today's restored wetlands reconnect a fragment of that hydrological and cultural legacy with the modern metropolis.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
