Pribaikalsky National Park

Pribaikalsky National Park stretches as a narrow ribbon along roughly 470 kilometers of the western shore of Lake Baikal, in the Irkutsk Oblast of southeastern Siberia. Established on 13 February 1986, it is among the earliest national parks in Russia and forms part of the Lake Baikal UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1996. The park protects a strikingly varied ecological transition zone. Within its boundaries lie the eastern slopes of the Primorsky Range, the southern part of the Olkha Plateau, the basin of the Bolshaya Rechka river, and the entirety of Olkhon Island, Lake Baikal's largest island. Its landscapes shift from steppes, sand dunes and rocky deserts near the shore to dark coniferous taiga, subalpine thickets of Siberian dwarf pine, and tundra on the higher watersheds. Beyond its natural significance, Pribaikalsky is also recognized for the ongoing coexistence of local communities, traditional land use, and large numbers of seasonal visitors, including the famous Circum-Baikal Railway along the southwestern shore. In biodiversity, archaeological heritage, and landscape diversity, it surpasses every other protected area in the Baikal region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
