Saanane Island National Park

Saanane Island National Park is a compact freshwater island national park located in Lake Victoria within Ilemela District of Mwanza Region in northern Tanzania. Established in 2013, it is the smallest national park in Tanzania, covering just 2.8 square kilometers of island and surrounding waters. The park derives its name from Mzee Saanane Chavandi, a local farmer and fisherman who historically inhabited the island. This protected area holds exceptional conservation significance as the only location in Tanzania where De-brazza's monkeys are found, a primate species with a restricted range across central Africa. The island supports a diverse community of mammals including vervet monkeys, zebras, wild cats, and rock hyraxes, alongside more than 40 recorded bird species.
