About Shambe National Park

Shambe National Park

Shambe National Park is a protected area in South Sudan, established in 1985 on the west bank of the White Nile in the remote interior of the country. The park covers approximately 620 square kilometers of savanna and riverine landscape in Jonglei State, situated between the Adior and Malek payam administrative areas near the legendary Ramciel. This national park was created primarily to provide legal protection for populations of wild mammals including lions, giraffes, gazelles, monkeys, foxes, and ostriches. The park lies in a region characterized by extensive wetlands, seasonal flooding, and mixtures of grassland and woodland that support diverse wildlife populations. South Sudan's protected area network remains one of the least developed in Africa, and Shambe represents one of the country's attempts to conserve its natural heritage despite significant logistical and political challenges.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
