Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park is a dramatic volcanic landscape occupying the southwestern portion of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain. Established in 1974, it encompasses approximately 51 square kilometers of almost entirely volcanic terrain, making it the only national park in Spain that is exclusively geological in character. The park protects one of the most significant recent volcanic formations in the Macaronesian region, shaped primarily by the spectacular eruptive period between 1730 and 1736 that buried nine villages and transformed a quarter of the island. Today, Timanfaya stands as a powerful testament to volcanic forces, with surface temperatures still reaching extreme heat at shallow depths, creating natural steam geysers that remain an active demonstration of the geothermal energy still present beneath the landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
