A dramatic karst valley near Trieste where Alpine and Mediterranean worlds meet

Val Rosandra

Val Rosandra is a steep, narrow river valley carved by the Rosandra torrent on the southwestern edge of Trieste, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy. It straddles the border area between the Italian municipality of San Dorligo della Valle and the Slovenian municipality of Hrpelje-Kozina, and forms one of the rare natural breaks in the limestone Carso plateau that separates the Adriatic coast from the interior. The valley is renowned for its wild, almost canyon-like scenery, with vertical cliffs, scree slopes, narrow gorges, and the striking Supet waterfall, all set within the broader Karst landscape. Its combination of panoramic walls, deep fissures, and numerous caves has made it a classic destination for speleologists and rock climbers, and an important natural reference point for understanding karst phenomena. Since 1996, Val Rosandra has been protected as a regional nature reserve. It is also recognized as a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area, safeguarding an unusually rich mosaic of habitats where subalpine and Mediterranean climates overlap within a very short distance. Today the reserve functions as a quiet natural escape only minutes from Trieste, accessed through the village of Bagnoli della Rosandra.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
