Vjosa-Nartë Protected Landscape

Vjosa–Nartë Protected Landscape is a coastal wetland reserve in south-western Albania, running from the lower Vjosa River delta to the Narta Lagoon system north of the Bay of Vlorë. The landscape blends brackish lagoons, saltpans, coastal marshes, sand dunes, pine forest, agricultural plots and small settlements along the Adriatic Sea, providing one of the country's most important habitats for migratory and wintering waterbirds. Designated in 2004 as a water-and-land protected landscape (IUCN Category V) and later reaffirmed through Albanian decisions in 2022 and 2024, the area sits on the Adriatic Flyway and has been recognized as an Important Bird Area, an Emerald Network candidate site under the Bern Convention, and a Ramsar-qualifying wetland for wintering waterbirds. The reserve has become a focal point of national environmental debate, particularly around the construction of Vlora International Airport within its boundaries beginning in 2021 and the 2026 protests associated with the Flamingo Revolution, in which flamingos and other wetland species became potent symbols of opposition to large-scale development along the protected coast.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
