Volcán Tacaná

Volcán Tacaná is an active stratovolcano of Central America that straddles the border between Mexico, in the state of Chiapas, and Guatemala, in the Department of San Marcos. Rising to roughly 4,092 meters above sea level, it is among the highest peaks in both countries: the eighth-highest summit in Mexico and the second-highest in Guatemala. The mountain belongs to the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and forms a natural boundary between the two nations, with its upper slopes occasionally dusted in snow despite the tropical latitude. Landscape around Tacaná descends through shaded cafetales, agricultural villages, and stands of cloud forest before giving way to the cooler, rock-strewn alpine terrain of the upper flanks. Fumaroles on the west-southwest flank, along with thermal springs between 1,500 and 2,100 meters elevation, hint at the living volcanic system that defines the massif. Meaning 'house of fire' in the Mam language, Tacaná remains both a regional landmark and a monitored natural boundary between two countries.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
