Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve

Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve is a large national game reserve in Malawi, set on low-lying terrain to the southeast of the Nyika Plateau and to the north of the floodplains of the South Rukuru River. Covering roughly 1,000 square kilometers, the reserve lies in stark contrast to the highland grasslands of the nearby Nyika National Park and instead protects a mosaic of broad floodplain wetlands, mopane woodland, and miombo savanna. The wetland character of the reserve defines much of its ecological identity. Seasonal marshes, open water bodies such as Lake Kazuni, and riparian corridors attract large numbers of waterbirds and support impressive pods of hippopotamus. Surrounding woodlands host substantial populations of elephants, buffalo and several widespread antelope species, while carnivores such as lions, leopards and wild dogs move through the area, often crossing from the adjacent North Luangwa National Park in Zambia. Despite its size and ecological richness, Vwaza Marsh remains one of Malawi's quieter reserves, with visitor numbers limited by poor road conditions and challenging access. This relative isolation has helped preserve its wilderness character, and the reserve is increasingly recognized for both its wetland importance and its role as a cross-border refuge for large mammals between Malawi and Zambia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
