At an elevation of 2,070 meters above sea level, the shallow saline lake covers a surface area of approximately 130 square kilometers during periods of full water levels. The lake receives inflow from three major rivers: the Ghazni, Sardeh, and Nahara, which collectively drain a watershed of 17,252 square kilometers. The lake is notable for its alkaline waters, periodic drying cycles, and the presence of two small islands near its southeastern shore. The surrounding wetlands have been recognized internationally as an Important Bird Area due to their significance for migratory waterfowl and their role as a critical stopover site along Central Asian flyways.
