Åkersvika Nature Reserve

Åkersvika Nature Reserve is a protected wetland area located in the Åkersvika bay at the northern end of Lake Mjøsa, Norway's largest lake, spanning parts of the municipalities of Hamar and Stange in Innlandet county. The reserve was established by royal resolution on 26 July 1974, making it not only one of Norway's notable nature reserves but also the country's first area to be designated under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. The reserve protects a rich wetland ecosystem including shallow bays, reed beds, mudflats, and shoreline habitats that support a wide variety of waterbird species. It serves as a crucial staging and breeding area for wetland birds, particularly during spring and autumn migration when waterfowl, waders, and other species pass through in large numbers. Bird counts carried out between 1974 and 2013 have documented the ecological importance of the site, with the mallard being the most commonly observed species in both seasons. The conservation significance of Åkersvika extends beyond ornithology. It represents an important example of lowland freshwater wetland protection in southern Norway, where such habitats have been heavily modified by agriculture and development. The reserve has also experienced direct interaction with major infrastructure, as the European route E6 motorway crosses through the protected area, with mitigation and compensation measures undertaken to balance transportation needs with habitat conservation.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
