Asan Conservation Reserve

The Asan Conservation Reserve is a wetland of national and international significance in northern India, situated where the Asan River meets the Eastern Yamuna Canal at the Uttarakhand-Himachal Pradesh border in the Doon Valley of Dehradun district. Created in 1967 by the construction of the Asan Barrage, the reservoir, also known as Dhalipur Lake, forms a calm, year-round water body that has matured into one of North India's most important bird habitats. In 2020 it became Uttarakhand's first designated Ramsar site, formally recognizing its value as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Beyond its ecological role, the site combines engineering, hydrology, and biodiversity in a single compact landscape. The barrage feeds water to the Kulhal and Khara hydroelectric power stations along the Eastern Yamuna Canal and shapes the seasonal character of the wetland. The reserve attracts a substantial mix of resident and migratory birdlife, including threatened species tracked by the IUCN Red List, making it a focal point for birdwatchers, conservation researchers, and naturalists visiting the Doon Valley. The conservation reserve reflects a wider shift in how India values engineered and manmade wetlands. Where the barrage was once appreciated mainly as a hydropower and irrigation structure, the resulting reservoir is now recognized as a biodiversity refuge and a protected natural area in its own right, drawing visitors throughout the cool and migratory seasons.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
