A coastal wetland sanctuary protecting one of Europe's most significant bird migration corridors near Thessaloniki

Axios Delta National Park

Axios Delta National Park is a sprawling coastal wetland complex on the west coast of the Thermaic Gulf in Central Macedonia, Greece. Established in 2009 but with protection roots dating back to 1971 as a Ramsar site, the park encompasses the deltas and estuaries of several major rivers including the Axios (Vardar), Haliacmon, Loudias, and Gallikos. Covering approximately 338 square kilometers, this protected area lies within five regional units and extends as close as 10 kilometers from Greece's second-largest city, Thessaloniki. The park is distinguished by its extraordinary biodiversity and international conservation significance. It functions as a major hub along the East Atlantic Flyway, one of Europe's primary bird migration routes, supporting an astonishing 299 bird species—representing roughly two-thirds of all bird species ever recorded in Greece. The wetland complex includes lagoons, reedbeds, sand dunes, and brackish marshes that together create a vital habitat for waterfowl, waders, and colonial nesting birds. The park is designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, an Important Bird Area (IBA), and forms part of the Natura 2000 European ecological network. The landscape is characterized by a mosaic of aquatic environments where river systems meet the Aegean Sea, creating productive brackish ecosystems. The area also supports traditional human activities including rice cultivation, mussel farming, salt production, and water buffalo husbandry—practices that have shaped the region's character for generations and now coexist within the protected area framework.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.
