Culgoa Floodplain National Park

Culgoa Floodplain National Park is a protected natural area in South West Queensland, Australia, spanning approximately 42,859 hectares along the state's western border with New South Wales. The park occupies the former pastoral property of Byra Station and encompasses a diverse floodplain ecosystem fed by the Culgoa River in its eastern reaches and the Nebine Creek catchment to the west. Characterized by woodland vegetation and seasonal flooding patterns, the area represents a significant conservation reserve in Queensland's semi-arid interior. The park is situated near the small township of Hebel, approximately 630 kilometres west of Brisbane, with its southern boundary following part of the state border between Queensland and New South Wales. The floodplain supports remarkable biodiversity, particularly in its bird communities, with 150 species recorded within the park boundaries. This includes ten honeyeater species, all six of Australia's woodswallow species, and various parrot species. The landscape features muddy pools formed by natural springs from the Great Artesian Basin in certain areas, creating unique wetland habitats amid the broader woodland environment. The park preserves important Aboriginal heritage sites, including stone tool scatters and cooking areas that demonstrate the long human history of this landscape. Access is restricted to four-wheel-drive vehicles, and while camping is permitted, visitors must be self-sufficient as no facilities or marked walking tracks are provided.
