Jabal Aja Protected Area

Jabal Aja Protected Area is a large conservation area in northern Saudi Arabia centered on a distinctive red granite mountain range that rises abruptly from the surrounding desert plains. The protected area covers approximately 200,000 hectares and is situated west and southwest of the city of Ha'il, close to the edge of the An Nafud desert. This mountain outlier represents a critical ecological island within the Saharo-Arabian region, receiving noticeably more rainfall than the surrounding arid terrain and supporting plant and animal communities more typical of Mediterranean and Irano-Turanian ecosystems. The reserve has been recognized internationally as both an Important Plant Area and an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area, reflecting its exceptional biodiversity value in a region where such habitats are scarce. The mountain range stretches roughly 100 kilometers in length and varies between 10 and 35 kilometers in width, with elevations ranging from 900 to 1,550 meters above sea level.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
