Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve

Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve is a large protected natural area in the Dhofar Governorate of southern Oman, covering approximately 4,500 square kilometres of rugged mountain and escarpment terrain within the Dhofar Mountains. Designated as a nature reserve, it preserves an arid and semi-arid landscape of deep valleys, rocky plateaus, and remote uplands that remain largely uninhabited, with no permanent human population living inside its boundaries. The reserve is internationally recognized for its role as one of the last surviving refuges of the critically endangered Arabian leopard, a wide-ranging big cat that depends on the kind of steep, undisturbed habitat that Jabal Samhan still provides. Camera traps and field surveys suggest that around twenty individual Arabian leopards may still roam these mountains, making the area one of the most important strongholds for the subspecies anywhere on the Arabian Peninsula. Beyond its significance for leopard conservation, Jabal Samhan sustains populations of mountain ungulates, small desert mammals, and a variety of birdlife that together form a functioning arid mountain ecosystem. Its location in southern Arabia, near the city of Salalah and at the interface between the Dhofar escarpment and the surrounding deserts, gives the reserve both regional ecological importance and a strong identity as a frontier of wildlife conservation in Oman.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
