Kibira National Park

Kibira National Park is a protected montane forest area in northwestern Burundi, representing the country's sole remaining tract of primary montane rainforest. The park spans approximately 400 square kilometers along the mountains of the Congo-Nile Divide, extending from the provincial town of Muramvya northward to the Rwanda border where it becomes contiguous with Nyungwe National Park. This strategic location places Kibira at a critical ecological crossroads between two Great Lakes region ecosystems. The park rises above 1,100 meters in elevation, creating a unique high-altitude environment that supports biodiversity found nowhere else in Burundi. Originally established as a royal hunting reserve and later designated as a forest reserve in 1933, Kibira received national park status in 1980 and remains under the management of the Institut National pour l'Environnement et la Conservation de la Nature.
