Nuristan National Park

Nuristan National Park is a newly established protected area in eastern Afghanistan, announced by the Afghan government on 5 June 2020 coinciding with World Environment Day. The park encompasses the entire mountainous territory of Nuristan Province, a rugged landscape along the border with Pakistan that forms part of the greater Hindu Kush mountain system. This makes it the third national park in Afghanistan, following Band-e Amir National Park and Wakhan National Park. The region is historically known for its dense monsoon-influenced forests and exceptional biodiversity, including significant populations of snow leopard, leopard, Himalayan black bear, and markhor. The park is governed jointly by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation and local communities, though a detailed management plan and formal gazettement remain forthcoming.
