Colonial gold mining heritage and pre-Columbian archaeological site in the Dominican Republic

Pueblo Viejo National Park

Pueblo Viejo National Park is a cultural heritage site located in the La Vega Province of the Dominican Republic, protecting the remains of the colonial-era city of Concepción de la Vega and the historic Pueblo Viejo gold mine. Founded by Christopher Columbus in 1495 as a fortified settlement, the city grew around one of the Western Hemisphere's earliest and most productive gold mining operations. The settlement was destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1562, after which survivors relocated to the present-day city of La Vega. Today, the park preserves the archaeological foundations of this once-thriving colonial mining town, along with the ruins of the Concepción fortress. The site was added to UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List in 2001, recognizing its significance as one of the earliest European settlement and mining operations in the Americas.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
