Pyhä-Luosto National Park

Pyhä-Luosto National Park is a protected area in the far north of Finland, spanning the municipalities of Sodankylä, Pelkosenniemi, and Kemijärvi in the Lapland region. The park encompasses a dramatic chain of twelve fells known as tunturit, which represent the southernmost large fell system in Finland and consist of quartzite formations dating back nearly two billion years. Established in its original form in 1938 as Pyhätunturi National Park and expanded in 2005 to include the Luosto area, the park uniquely combines Finland's oldest and newest protected area status. The landscape features Finland's deepest gorge, Isokuru, which plunges over 200 meters and displays glacial wave patterns carved into ancient quartzite rock. The park's old-growth coniferous forests harbor some of Finland's oldest trees, with specimens exceeding 400 years, while its wetlands support the characteristic boreal ecosystem of northern Finland.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
