Grande-Synthe Regional Nature Reserve

The Grande-Synthe Regional Nature Reserve is a roughly 174-hectare protected area in the Hauts-de-France region of northern France, straddling the communes of Grande-Synthe and Mardyck near Dunkirk. Created in 2015, it lies between the urban fabric of the city and the surrounding industrial complexes, protecting a mosaic of habitats that have emerged from former market-gardening farmland. The reserve stands out as one of the largest regional nature reserves in Hauts-de-France and demonstrates how intensively used peri-urban land can be restored into a functional ecological landscape. The site is composed of three distinct sectors, the Grand-Prédembourg, the Petit-Prédembourg, and the Puythouck, each offering different ecological conditions. The Puythouck was shaped in the 1970s around a lake formed from sand quarrying for road construction, the Petit-Prédembourg carries wooded patches and hedgerows, and the Grand-Prédembourg consists largely of agricultural fallows. Together they form a network of sandy grasslands, dense shrubby thickets, mature woodlands, and open wetland habitats that support both resident wildlife and seasonal migrants. Ecologically, the reserve plays a meaningful role in the regional green and blue corridor, the trame verte et bleue, linking with other protected wetlands such as the Romelaëre ponds and the Platier d'Oye. It functions as an important migratory stopover and nesting area for birds, while also hosting notable populations of amphibians, invertebrates, and fungi. The reserve is managed by the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels du Nord et du Pas-de-Calais under a renewable 50-year designation.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
