Monti Pelati Nature Reserve

Monti Pelati Nature Reserve is a small protected area in the Canavese area of Piedmont, in northern Italy, administered by the Metropolitan City of Turin. Covering 146 hectares, it safeguards a narrow ridge of bare, sun-exposed hills that rise to around 585 meters above sea level near the tower of Torre Cives. Although the reserve sits close to the well known Ivrea Morainic Amphitheater, its geology is fundamentally different from the surrounding glacial landscape. The defining feature of the reserve is its substrate. The hills are made of peridotite, an ultrabasic rock rich in magnesium that originates from the upper mantle and is linked to the deep African mantle structure. Weathering of this unusual rock produces soils that are inhospitable to conventional agriculture but support plant communities and insects found almost nowhere else in the region. Because of this combination of rare geology, distinctive soils, and specialized flora, Monti Pelati is listed as a Site of Community Importance and Special Area of Conservation within the Natura 2000 network. It functions less as a destination for sweeping scenic vistas and more as a quiet scientific reserve where visitors encounter a fragment of western Alps natural heritage that cannot be easily replicated.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
