Riserva Speciale del Sacro Monte di Varallo

The Riserva Speciale del Sacro Monte di Varallo is a small regional nature reserve in the foothills of the Italian Alps, in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. It surrounds the celebrated Sacro Monte di Varallo, one of the oldest and most influential of the sacred mountains of northern Italy, where chapels dedicated to the life of Christ are set among wooded slopes above the town of Varallo in the Province of Vercelli. The protected area covers only about 22 hectares of forest, yet it carries both natural and cultural importance. The reserve preserves a reconstructed woodland setting of European beech, boxwood, yew, holm oak, and elm, intended to evoke the character of a Renaissance garden. It is managed as a tightly woven combination of natural heritage, religious heritage, and accessible outdoor recreation in the Valsesia valley. Although compact, the reserve is notable for combining ecological protection with one of Italy's most significant devotional and artistic landscapes. The wooded hill, the chapels, the panoramic views over Valsesia, and the historic funicular linking the town to the summit together make the reserve a distinctive example of a protected area anchored in centuries of religious, artistic, and civic tradition.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
