Shuklaphanta National Park

Shuklaphanta National Park is a protected area in the Terai lowlands of far-western Nepal, covering 305 square kilometers of grasslands, forests, riverbeds, and wetlands. The park sits at elevations ranging from 174 to 1,386 meters above sea level, bounded by the Mahakali River to the west and south, the Mahendra Highway to the north, and the Syali River to the east. Originally established as a royal hunting reserve in 1969 and formally gazetted as the Royal Shuklaphanta Wildlife Reserve in 1973, the area achieved national park status in 2017, making it one of Nepal's newer national parks. The park is part of the Terai-Duar savanna and grasslands ecosystem and lies within the broader Terai Arc Landscape, which spans across the Nepal-India border region. Its significance stems from the presence of the world's largest concentration of barasingha (swamp deer), a species that has found essential habitat in the park's extensive grassland patches.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
