Caribbean coastal protected area at the foot of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

Tayrona National Natural Park

Tayrona National Natural Park is a protected area in northern Colombia's Caribbean region, situated within the jurisdiction of Santa Marta in the Department of Magdalena. The park occupies approximately 150 square kilometers of land and 30 square kilometers of marine area along the Caribbean coast, at the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, one of the world's highest coastal mountain ranges. The protected area spans a remarkable ecological gradient from arid coastal plains at sea level to humid montane zones reaching 900 meters above sea level, creating diverse habitats that support exceptional biodiversity. Established in April 1964 through Law 191 of the Colombian Institute for Agrarian Reform, Tayrona represents a critical conservation corridor protecting endemic species found nowhere else on Earth, most notably the critically endangered cotton-top tamarin, whose last remaining population persists within the park's boundaries.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
