The reef system spans two geographically separate areas: one situated in front of the historic port city of Veracruz and another near Punta Antón Lizardo to the southwest. Together, these areas encompass approximately 17 coral reefs, numerous islands, and islets that rise from depths of up to 50 meters, forming a submarine mountain range within the inner Gulf of Mexico. The reef system is among the oldest in Mexico, with an estimated age of around 10,000 years. It holds significant ecological importance, serving as a habitat for more than 1,140 species of plants and animals, including 34 species that appear in Mexico's official list of endangered species. The park is designated as a Ramsar Wetland Site of International Importance, recognizing its exceptional biodiversity value despite centuries of anthropogenic pressure.
