Serbia's highest mountain range rising from the Pannonian plain

Vršac Mountains

The Vršac Mountains are a distinctive mountain range straddling the Serbia-Romania border in the Banat region, representing one of the most remarkable geological and ecological features of the Pannonian plain. Rising abruptly from the flat lowlands of Vojvodina, this arch-shaped massif reaches 641 meters at Gudurica peak, making it the highest point in all of Vojvodina. The mountains span approximately 170 square kilometers, with about 122 km² in Serbia and 48 km² in Romania. Unlike the nearby Carpathians, the Vršac Mountains are classified as Pannonian island mountains—isolated geological formations that once stood as islands in the ancient Pannonian Sea millions of years ago. The range supports exceptionally rich biodiversity, particularly in avian species, with over 120 registered bird species making it one of the most important ornithological habitats in Serbia. The mountains have been protected since 1982 as a Landscape of Outstanding Features, reflecting their significant natural and cultural value.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
