Brijuni Islands National Park

Brijuni Islands National Park is a protected archipelago in the northern Adriatic Sea off the western coast of Croatia's Istrian peninsula. The park comprises fourteen islands and islets spanning approximately 7.5 square kilometres of land, with the total protected area including surrounding waters extending to 33.9 square kilometres. The largest island, Veli Brijun (also known as Brioni Grande), lies about two kilometres from the mainland near the town of Fažana, while Mali Brijun serves as the second-largest island. The islands are celebrated for their distinctive Mediterranean landscape, combining forested areas, archaeological sites, and coastal scenery. The archipelago gained international prominence in 1956 when it hosted the historic Brioni Meeting between Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, and Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru—a gathering that laid the foundation for the Non-Aligned Movement. The islands served as Tito's personal summer residence from 1945 until his death in 1980, welcoming nearly a hundred foreign heads of state and numerous international celebrities. Designated as Croatia's national park in 1983, Brijuni protects a unique blend of natural habitats and cultural heritage, including Roman villa ruins, Byzantine fortifications, and a notable collection of exotic wildlife.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
