Chessibidmer

Chessibidmer is a small, nationally protected flat bog landscape in the eastern Bernese Oberland of Switzerland, situated about two kilometers north-northwest of the Grimsel Pass in the upper Aare valley within the municipality of Guttannen. The area sits just above 1800 meters in elevation and consists of a varied alpine terrace shaped by glacial action, with granite roches moutonnées, rock ledges, rocky basins, and small tarns giving way to two main flat sections where species-rich peatland, bog pools, and successional wetland have developed. The seven-hectare core marsh was added to the Swiss federal inventory of flat bogs of national importance in 1998, and the wider landscape forms part of the cantonal Grimsel nature reserve and the federal Moorlandschaft Grimsel (Sunnig Aar) inventory of particularly beautiful moor landscapes of national importance. The terrain also falls within the federal inventory of landscapes and natural monuments, in the landscape protection area of the Bernese High Alps and the Aletsch-Bietschhorn region. Aside from its ecological significance, Chessibidmer is notable for the geological story it tells: the bedrock of Grimsel granodiorite and central Aare granite was scoured by the powerful Aare glacier, which at its peak buried the entire landscape under roughly 700 meters of ice, leaving behind the sculpted granite, scattered erratics, and the small upland lakes and pools that now dot the moorland between the rock outcrops.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
