Cholistan Wildlife Sanctuary

Cholistan Wildlife Sanctuary is a large protected area in the Cholistan Desert region of Punjab, Pakistan, centered between the lesser settled northern fringe and the deeper sandy tracts of the south. The sanctuary covers an enormous expanse of arid land, including low sandy ridges, salty alluvial flats known locally as dahars, river terraces, sizable sand dunes, and dry depressions shaped by wind action. The area is defined by extreme desert conditions, with summer temperatures capable of climbing above 50 degrees Celsius and very limited, erratic rainfall concentrated mostly in the monsoon season. Despite this harsh climate, the sanctuary supports a remarkable mix of desert-adapted mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, making it an important refuge for species that have evolved to survive in one of South Asia's hottest landscapes. The sanctuary's significance lies in its combination of scale and ecological specialization. It preserves extensive dune systems and saline flats alongside populations of chinkara, desert cats, foxes, bustards, falcons, and numerous reptiles, providing a critical stronghold for wildlife in the otherwise heavily used agricultural and grazing lands of southern Punjab.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
