Chrysi

Chrysi is a small, largely uninhabited Greek island lying roughly 15 kilometres south of Crete, just off the coast near Ierapetra in the Libyan Sea. Together with the tiny neighbouring islet of Mikronisi, it forms part of the Cretan Islands and falls administratively within the municipality of Ierapetra in the Lasithi regional unit. The island is best known for its golden sand beaches, which give it its name, and for hosting what is widely regarded as the largest naturally formed Juniperus macrocarpa forest in Europe. Despite its very small size, with a highest point of only around 31 metres, Chrysi carries considerable ecological and cultural weight. It is recognised as an area of intense natural beauty and holds Minoan-era archaeological remains, a medieval chapel, a Roman cemetery, a salt pan, and a lighthouse. Today it functions primarily as a day-trip and nature destination, accessed seasonally by excursion boats from Ierapetra and the nearby village of Myrtos.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
