Foloi oak forest

The Foloi oak forest is a dense deciduous woodland in the western Peloponnese, occupying a high plateau in the Elis region near ancient Olympia. Covering roughly 40 square kilometers, it is built around the broadleaf Quercus frainetto, the Hungarian oak, with smaller numbers of downy oak and evergreen holm oak woven through the canopy. The forest stands out as one of the rare pure seed-regenerated oak forests of the Balkans, a profile that gives the protected area its strong ecological identity. Beyond its biological character, the woodland carries a deep mythological backdrop. The ancient Greeks associated the forest with centaurs and with oak-spirit dryads, and the name Pholoë itself is tied to the centaur king Pholos, friend of Heracles. Today the area is recognized within the Natura 2000 ecological network and is registered with the European Union Habitats Directive, underlining its importance for conservation as well as for cultural landscape.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
