Jebel Akhdar Mountains

The Jebel Akhdar Mountains form one of the most distinctive highland landscapes in eastern Arabia, forming a roughly 80-kilometer-long massif within the central section of the Hajar Mountains in Oman. Although surrounded by arid terrain, the range rises high enough to receive substantially more rainfall than its surroundings, supporting a Mediterranean-style upper climate and a ribbon of vegetation that gives the mountains their name, meaning 'The Green Mountain' in Arabic. Far more than a geological feature, Jebel Akhdar is a cultural and ecological landmark. Its terraced plateaus, deep wadis, and elevated orchards of pomegranates, apricots, walnuts, and roses have shaped life in Oman's interior for centuries, sustained by an ancient falaj irrigation tradition practiced by the Bani Riyam tribe. Since 2011 the area has been designated by the Sultan of Oman as a nature reserve, and in 2025 it earned UNESCO biosphere reserve recognition, underscoring both its biodiversity value and the growing need to protect a landscape shaped by climate pressures and fragile water systems.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
