Kolovesi National Park

Kolovesi National Park is a protected wilderness area in eastern Finland, spanning the Etelä-Savo and Pohjois-Karjala regions along the southern arm of Lake Saimaa. Established in 1990, the park covers approximately 61 square kilometers and protects one of Finland's most ecologically significant freshwater archipelagos. The landscape is characterized by dramatic rocky cliffs rising abruptly from the water, sculpted by glacial forces during the last Ice Age. These craggy islands and sheltered bays create a unique habitat that supports the critically endangered Saimaa ringed seal, one of the world's rarest seal species. The park also holds remarkable archaeological significance, with ancient cave paintings discovered on several islands providing evidence of human presence dating back thousands of years. Visitors experience this wild landscape primarily by kayak, canoe, or rowboat, as motorboats are prohibited throughout the protected area.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
