Lafnitztal

The Lafnitztal is a protected river valley in southeastern Austria, centred on the Lafnitz River and its associated floodplains, meadows, and riparian forests. It stretches from the Joglland highlands of Styria, through the border zone between Styria and Burgenland, and reaches the Hungarian frontier near Szentgotthárd. At 114 kilometres long, the Lafnitz is a left tributary of the Raab (Rába) and ultimately drains into the Danube system via the Black Sea. Across its middle and upper sections, particularly around the Fronius Auen near Rudersdorf and Fürstenfeld, the river still flows in a remarkably natural, meandering state. Designated on 1 March 2002 as Austria's eleventh Ramsar Convention wetland, the Lafnitztal is also a Natura 2000 site. The valley supports relict habitats such as floodplain forests, tall herb communities, and moorgrass meadows, alongside rare species including water chestnut, kingfisher, and black stork.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
