Lake Kerkini

Lake Kerkini is an artificial reservoir in Central Macedonia, Greece, created in 1932 on the site of what was once an extensive natural marshland along the Strymon River. The lake and its surrounding wetlands now form one of the most important birdwatching destinations in Greece, sitting along a major migratory flyway that links the Aegean Sea with the Balkans, the Black Sea, and the Hungarian steppes. Surrounded by flat plains and semi-mountainous terrain, the lake is framed by the mountains of Belasica and Krousia, creating a distinctive landscape where open water, riverside forests, reed beds, and water-lilies meet cultivated lowlands and wooded slopes. The reservoir plays a dual role as a working piece of hydraulic infrastructure supporting agriculture and as a thriving freshwater habitat for wildlife. Recognized internationally as a Ramsar Wetland of international importance, Lake Kerkini hosts rich biodiversity, including large waterbird colonies, a famous herd of water buffalo, and a wide range of fish, amphibians, and reptiles. It is widely regarded as an example of how careful human intervention can enhance, rather than diminish, a wetland ecosystem.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
