Loktak Lake

Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India, located in the state of Manipur near the town of Moirang. It is a shallow, pulsating lake whose surface area expands dramatically during the monsoon season, covering roughly 250 to 500 square kilometers depending on rainfall and water levels. The lake is fringed by small hillocks, inhabited islands, and a network of rivers that drain the surrounding Manipur Valley. The lake is renowned for its phumdis, which are heterogeneous floating mats of vegetation, soil, and organic matter in various stages of decomposition. These living islands drift over the water surface and create distinctive semi-aquatic microhabitats. The largest phumdi, on the southeastern shore, hosts Keibul Lamjao National Park, the only floating national park in the world and the last refuge of the endangered Sangai deer. Beyond its ecological importance, Loktak Lake is deeply tied to the economy and culture of Manipur. It supports inland fisheries, irrigation, and hydropower generation, while sustaining thousands of rural households around its shores. Designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1990, the lake is both a symbol of the region's natural heritage and a focal point for ongoing conservation challenges.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
