Machakhela National Park

Machakhela National Park is a protected area in the Adjara Autonomous Republic of southwestern Georgia, established in 2012 to preserve one of the region's most ecologically significant forest ecosystems. The park occupies the valley of the Machakhelistsqali River, a mountainous drainage that cuts through the lower reaches of the Little Caucasus range before descending toward the Black Sea coast near Batumi. The protected area spans approximately 130.7 square kilometers of mountainous terrain characterized by deep gorged valleys, steep forested slopes, and the characteristic lush vegetation of the Euxine-Colchic broadleaf forest biome. This forest type represents a biodiversity hotspot with numerous endemic and relict species that survived the Pleistocene glaciations in this humid refugium. The park is managed by Georgia's Agency of Protected Areas and provides a framework for both conservation and controlled ecological tourism in a region historically known as Machakheli, famed for its medieval fortress architecture and traditional winemaking culture.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
