Madhav National Park

Madhav National Park is a national park located in Shivpuri District of Gwalior division in northwest Madhya Pradesh, India. Established in 1956 as Shivpuri National Park with an initial area of 167 square kilometers, the park was renamed Madhav National Park in 1958 in honor of Madho Rao Scindia and expanded to its current extent of 354 square kilometers. The park lies within the Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forest ecoregion and features a diverse landscape of forested hills and flat grasslands surrounding its central reservoir, Sakhya Sagar. This historical landscape was once the royal hunting grounds of Mughal emperors since the 16th century, later used by Rajputana rulers, Gwalior royals, and British dignitaries including British monarchs and viceroys. The park's conservation significance was elevated in 2022 when Sakhya Sagar was designated as a Ramsar wetland site, recognizing its importance as a biodiverse waterbody within the arid to semi-arid central Indian landscape.
