Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve

Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve is a protected nature reserve in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, in eastern Australia. It lies on the Great Dividing Range, about 35 kilometres north-east of Mudgee, where the high country of the divide dips to one of its lowest crossings. The reserve covers around 5,934 hectares of rugged sandstone terrain, dry eucalypt forest, and cypress woodland. The reserve is known for its unusual combination of eastern and western flora and fauna, a result of its position straddling a low point on the Great Divide. Rain falling on the eastern slopes eventually reaches the Hunter River, while rain on the western slopes travels far across the inland plains to the Darling River system. This transitional geography gives Munghorn Gap a distinctive mix of moist mountain species and dry-country plants, and supports a notably high diversity of birdlife. Munghorn Gap is also recognized for its dramatic pagoda-like sandstone formations, which are accessible along the Castle Rocks walking trail. The reserve forms part of the Mudgee-Wollar Important Bird Area, an area identified by BirdLife International for its importance to the endangered regent honeyeater, and it has attracted birdwatchers from across the region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
