Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary

Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is a vast freshwater wetland in Gujarat, India, built around a shallow lake and surrounding marshes about 64 kilometers west of Ahmedabad. Declared a bird sanctuary in April 1969 and later recognized as a Ramsar site of international importance in 2012, it is the largest wetland bird sanctuary in Gujarat and among the largest in India. The sanctuary's defining character is its seasonal transformation into one of South Asia's most dramatic bird gatherings. After the Indian monsoon, thousands of waterfowl arrive from the north, joined by resident wetland species. Pelicans, flamingos, white storks, herons, ducks, and crakes crowd the shallow fringes of the lake, while wading birds feed along the marshy edges. Beyond birds, the wetland also supports fish, aquatic plants, and a few notable mammals such as the endangered Indian wild ass and black buck, which occasionally appear on the surrounding flats. Nal Sarovar is not just a wildlife site but a living cultural landscape as well. Migrating shepherds work the islands within the lake, and the Padhar community on the banks sustains a heritage of folk dance, artisanship, and boatmanship. Together with an on-site interpretation center, country-boat birding, and the spectacle of sunrise over open water, the sanctuary offers a layered experience that blends ecology, conservation, and regional identity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
