Phou Hin Poun National Biodiversity Conservation Area

Phou Hin Poun National Biodiversity Conservation Area is one of the National Biodiversity Conservation Areas of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, situated in Khammouane Province in the central part of the country. It encompasses a rugged limestone tower karst landscape within the Annamite Range, a region known for its dramatic stone formations, cave systems, and remnant dry evergreen vegetation. The area was formally designated in 1993 and is administered by the Department of Forestry within the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Biologically, Phou Hin Poun is significant because of its role as a refuge for rare and newly described species found in the karst forests of the Annamites. It has yielded remarkable zoological discoveries, including the Laotian rock rat, whose existence reshaped understanding of rodent family evolution, and a new genus of Old World rat. The combination of porous karst terrain, tropical savanna climate, and human population living within its boundaries gives the conservation area a distinctive profile within the Lao protected-area system.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
